Course Descriptions:

Italian 1 and 2: The combination of the two courses constitutes the basic introduction to contemporary spoken Italian. They both use the newly-introduced textbook, Piazza, which offers a culture-rich learning environment—printed, online, video- and web-based--with an array of faces, voices, and dialects from each region of Italy.  These courses offer intensive training on how to talk with Italians on almost every subject of daily living. Perfect as well for your own “after the course” self-teaching.

Italian 3+4 (combined course): This course “rounds out” and supplements the Italian learned in It.1 and 2, concentrating on areas where students need additional practice. It also explores numerous aspects of contemporary Italian culture, making significant use of Italian-language materials, including letters written to Italian newspapers (to Beppe Severgnini and Susanna Agnelli), and explores ways Italians see themselves.

Italian 50A: This series of courses (Ital 50A, 50B, & 50C) favors basic conversation on a few topics, concentrating on conversing in Italian on every-day subjects using clear pronunciation and appropriate intonation. It is aimed primarily at those will be visiting Italy. Textbook: The Italian project,1a., by Edilingua

Why Study Italian?

Career Education – Academic Success – Personal Development

Italy is one of the top eight economies in the world, and is a member of the G8 Group of the wealthiest democracies. A knowledge of Italian is useful for those planning careers in the fashion, automotive, viticulture, and hospitality industries, as well as in art history, music, linguistics, education, international relations, and many other fields. American companies expanding in Italy have a great demand for software designers, systems engineers, technical support, marketers and managers who know both Italian and English.

Spoken by c. 85 million people worldwide, Italian is also the language closest to both Spanish and English—so Spanish-speakers in particular learn it quickly and improve their abilities in those languages also. Why? Both Italian and Spanish evolved from Latin, and an estimated 60% of English vocabulary comes directly from Latin!

Note: Italian courses numbered 1-49 are transferable to the University of California (UC) and the California State University (CSU). Courses numbered 50-99 are transferable to the California State University. All Italian courses provide credit for the Associate degree. Italian 1-4 fulfill General Education requirements at SRJC, CSU, and UC.
